Stressed out teens

Posted: Updated:

You may think being a teen is easy, but the American Psychological Association says many teens are just as stressed as their parents.

However, they don’t have the life experience to know how to handle all the pressure.

More and more teens are reporting unhealthy levels of stress. The stress is affecting their mood, their sleep and their grades.

Teens may not have the tools to cope, but there are always ways you can help.

Jeremiah Cook, a sophomore at Clarkston High School, is not surprised to hear teens are just as stressed as adults. He says he feels it every day.

For a lot of teens life is complicated: you’re trying to stand out in school, please your parents and find your way in a struggling economy.

Dr. Nadine Kaslow, President of the American Psychological Association and Emory psychologist, says teens also worry about dating, relationships and nonstop technology.

"Bullying has become worse, that adds to the stress in kids' lives. There's more family breakups, and children going back and forth between one family and another,” said Kaslow.

According to Dr. Kaslow, as we get older we develop better strategies for coping with stress, but many teens, whose brains are still developing, aren't there yet.

"You need to recognize the signs and symptoms of stress. You're starting to have too many headaches, or stomach aches, you're not sleeping as well, you're not eating as well. Your grades start to fail,” said Kaslow.

Once you know you're stressed, Dr. Kaslow says, you need to find an outlet such as sleeping and exercising.

According to Dr. Kaslow, there is not one solution that works for everyone. She says take the approach that’s easiest for you.
