NORTH REDINGTON BEACH (FOX 13) -
It's not every day you witness what Todd Unbehagen saw Saturday on North Redington Beach.
There was an elephant in the water wading just a few feet from shore. And there were people actually riding the elephant.
"I never thought anyone would believe it, so I took the pictures and video," Unbehagen told FOX 13.
That video, which he posted on Facebook, is going viral. He had no idea why the elephant was there, or who brought it to the beach.
Claudia McCorkle, who owns a home along the beach, was throwing a birthday bash and decided to rent an elephant. She spoke with FOX 13 on Monday.
She said she paid $3,500 for four hours of elephant time from a company called Extreme Entertainment. You may wonder if it's legal. Usually, it's not.
But the city commission told FOX 13 that McCorkle came to them in February with a special request to have the elephant. They were all for it, even allowing her to use an empty lot to move the elephant from Gulf Boulevard to the beach.
Unbehagen said he's been getting calls from all over the country after uploading the video. McCorkle has stayed out of the spotlight, until now.
She said the feedback she received from her party guests – about 40 – was incredibly positive. They had quite a time with Judy, which is the elephant's name.
Most of the guests had no idea it would be there. They were shocked when they arrived and saw her standing in the Gulf behind her home.
