Couple Weds During 'New Hope Celebrates Pride Week'

Posted: Updated:
BUCKS COUNTY, Pa. -

As the battle for marriage equality continues in the Delaware Valley, one Bucks County couple is bringing new hope to the issue.

During New Hope Celebrates Pride Week, several events have taken place in the borough.

It’s what happened across the river in New Jersey that gave this area the most to celebrate.

In one of the largest wedding processions you'll see, hundreds joined Fred Blank and Charles Young, a couple of 35 years, as they finally tied the knot in Lambertville.

“I now pronounce you husband and wife!” Lambertville Mayor David Delvecchio said through loud cheers.

The newlyweds live in Bucks County, where Pennsylvania law prohibits same sex marriage.

“It just means everything in hopes that the laws will change in Pennsylvania, I mean that’s the point of all this. We’re very proud and grateful to be married in New Jersey, but frankly would have rather been married in our home state," Blank said.

But, as the way things stand, the couple had to rely on their friends across the Delaware River to officiate a ceremony they've waited a long time to have.

“We’ve said that marriage is very important to us and we’ve been thinking about it for many years. We’ve discussed it many times, but knowing there was no way we were going to get married in Pennsylvania, this was our opportunity to do it," Young said.

From there the march continued into New Hope, where the hope, is to bridge the gap in marriage equality.

Mayor Larry Keller shares his borough’s namesake, that will soon be a reality.

“It has to get in front of the senate and it has to get in front of the house and I think realistically we’re looking at six to 12 months it’s going to happen. But it’s not going to be easy and everybody has to work for it, but I’m confident we’ll end up as successful as New Jersey was," Keller said.

Keller said he sent a letter to Governor Tom Corbett asking him to reconsider his opposition to gay marriage.

The four leading contenders for the democratic ticket for governor have said they would sign legislation to recognize same sex marriage.
