"An update on Courageous Christy" By Lisa Rayam

On any given day, I get an email asking "How is Courageous Christy?" I'm not surprised. How can this indomitable spirit of a lady ever be forgotten? On April 2013, Christy was thrust into a long, arduous and very painful journey. An ex-boyfriend is accused and indicted on charges he spilled sulfuric acid all over a treasured face that beamed mother, daughter, sister, friend and counselor by trade.

Ever since that day, she feels her true identity has been called into question. She often asks herself..."Who is the Christy living behind a melted face?"And so she writes:

"I decided a few months ago to stop waiting for the end of the process of getting a better face to live, but to instead live in the process of getting one...and making that decision has set me free..that is the difference you see me. If we wait until life is grand to be happy, then we may just be waiting for an eternity...”

Her freedom has had its challenges.

Four months ago, I traveled with Christy to Baltimore where a top surgeon set out to gingerly repair her face. Two delicate surgeries took place that round. It was only the beginning. Now it is July, a time for water parks, summer vacations and smothering heat. For Christy, the summer fun is muted by yet another surgery-- Operation Number 12.....12.

Recovery has been tedious. Every surgery comes with a great amount of pain. Christy adds, there is anxiety when the bandages are peeled in hopes she will find someone familiar. She accepts there is almost always a bout of depression coupled with the warming of support from family and friends. Another source for Christy’s healing is blogging. Daily. Taking notes are this experienced counselor's form of therapy. She chronicles the spurts of sadness, fear, anything mundane and humorous. Just last week, she wrote:

"This was an ugghh kind of day, a day that I was feeling especially unpretty....soooo, I stepped into my stilettos and strutted around the house for a bit. I'm so glad that pretty is not just a look, but it is a feeling. It didn't last, but for about 5 minutes, I felt pretty and sexy in my 6 inch gold stilettos...."

Christy Tucker Sims' life changed forever just one year ago. In an instant she became the victim of a brutal acid attack at the hands of her then boyfriend.

The attack disfigured her face and sent her into hiding, but now she wants the world to see her scars.

She wants to send a message of strength to other victims.

Sims sat down with FOX 5’s Lisa Rayam to tell her story and hopefully change lives.

Warning: the above video is very graphic and was painful for Sims to share.
