On The Golf Course With Special Olympics Athlete Laura Gironda

Posted: Updated:
West Windsor, New Jersey (My9NJ) - Laura Gironda is a golfer competing for team New Jersey in this year’s Special Olympics. She took to the course at Mercer Oaks in West Windsor, New Jersey where the Special Olympics competition will take place this June.

Gironda plays with her grandfather, John Harmon, who introduced her to golf when she was about 13 years-old. Because she initially had trouble focusing on the ball, Harmon jokingly ingrained the three most import rules of golf in her head.

“Keep your head down, keep your stupid head down, and keep your idiot head down,” she said.

Gironda says that she likes golf because it’s relaxing and it gives her quality time to spend with her grandfather, who is also her biggest fan.

“She’s the best female player in New Jersey. She has a home course advantage,” Harmon praised.

Gironda said that she can drive the ball over 250 yards.

“I just fell in love with my driver, I feel like my driver is the best club because that’s where it all happens. You just got to make sure that it hits straight and far,” she explained.

Gironda was also one of a few New Jersey Olympians who were picked to be featured on Wheaties cereal boxes where you can see her on the back sporting her team New Jersey gear!

Her first day competing on the golf course is June 14th.
