Detroit teacher pushing for safer classrooms, more training

Posted: Updated:
(WJBK) - A Detroit teacher reinstated after being fired is using her story to make a difference for teachers across metro Detroit.

Officials with the Education Achievement Authority decided earlier this week to reinstate Tiffani Eaton and give her retro pay from the date of her dismissal.

Eaton was terminated from Pershing High School after video surfaced showing her swinging a broom to break up a fight between two of her students.

Now, she is starting a fight of her own and is demanding safer classrooms and more training for her fellow teachers so this doesn't happen again.

Eaton, whose two-way security radio was not working at the time, intervenes and strikes one of the students on the back with a broom multiple times. The student backs off, but then the other student runs back towards him and the fight continues.

The fight finally appears to end up when a student steps in and pulls the two apart. The video ends moments later.

Click on the video player above to hear more from Eaton about her initiative in a report from FOX 2's Maurielle Lue.

When asked if she is going to return to Pershing, she says she "loves the students there" but doesn't know if now the best time to "reconnect."
