Detroit 4th graders visit birdwatching hot spot

Posted: Updated:
(WJBK) - The biggest week in American birdwatching is underway, and an area about 90 minutes south of metro Detroit is one of the country's hot spots.

Magee Marsh near Toledo, Ohio is considered one of the top 10 birdwatching spots in the U.S. in the month of May. Tropical birds stop there to rest before crossing Lake Eerie. Some still have hundreds of miles left in their journey north.

The area expects about 80,000 visitors during this time.

Some of those visitors were a group of fourth graders from Detroit. The group Saving Birds Thru Habitat out of Leelanau County organized and funded the field trip for 24 students and their teachers.
