Canal Street vendors say they fear police harassment

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

A number of licensed street vendors were not in their usual spots on Canal Street on Monday. Where Chun Yin and her invalid husband were last week was empty Monday. After our report Thursday on how Chun Yin had been arrested 11 times for working for her licensed husband, other vendors say that NYPD officers on Friday went to every vendor on Canal Street. The officers are from a Patrol Bureau Midtown South specialized unit.

Community activists say the vendors shut down not knowing what violations the officers might ticket for.

Most vendors were so frightened that they refused to do on camera interviews Monday. One spoke with his identify hidden. The attorney for the vendors called Friday's police visit harassment and noted that no tickets were issued.

One vendor willing to go public was Yueying Wong. She sells bamboo plants on Canal Street. She made a new allegation against the officers about when she was arrested: she said they confiscated the expensive plants.

I sent an e-mail to the police on Thursday asking for a comment. I asked if officers were pressuring the licensed Canal Street vendors because of their ongoing battle against the counterfeiters on Canal Street. I still have not heard back.

It appears the subway bedbug problem we've been reporting is getting worse. Commuters already have to contend with sweltering platforms, scurrying rats and packed train cars, and now there's another transit woe: fear of bedbugs.

Heavy thunderstorms swept through the tri-state on Sunday causing flash floods and lightning strikes that injured 3 people. The three men were struck at Orchard Beach in the Bronx Sunday afternoon and were being treated at a local hospital. Meanwhile, various Labor Day weekend celebrations were interrupted, delayed and even canceled as the U.S. Open tennis tournament had to be postponed and the Electric Zoo musical festival on Randall's Island had to be prematurely shut down.
