Silverdome 'seat sale' underway

PONTIAC, Mich. (WJBK) - The former home of the Detroit Lions in Pontiac has seen better days. Parts of the Silverdome are being sold or auctioned off. Right now, there's a seat sale underway.

It was once the proud home of the Detroit Lions and once the largest stadium in the NFL. Now, the Silverdome looks like it's been toilet papered. All of that white you see is really the shredded dome in a sorry state, and the seats are among the first to be sold off and carted away.

"I already have Tigers seats from old Tigers stadium so I thought these would go well with those to have around the pool table we have in kind of like a 'man cave' type place," said Michael Troost of South Lyon.

He's among the thousands signing on to purchase seats online. Prices start at $100 for a single seat and go up from there. The Silverdome had 80,000 seats, well used by Lions fans from 1975-2001 and concert goers, too. Jeff Hunt was among them.

"I saw Madonna there, Michael Jackson, went to the WWF and then I went to all the World Cup games and also as a kid just going to the Lions with the family," he said.

Other items including the scoreboard, signs and even urinals will be auctioned off later in May by Plymouth-based RJM Auctions. They say the seats are popular and people have their preferences.

"Whether you want just a random seat or a number 20 seat or the season tickets you saw the games in, we have a lot of options," said Jim Passeno with RJM Auctions.

Of course the Lions are now at Ford Field in Detroit and the future of the Silverdome is up in the air. The Toronto-based parent company lost a bid for a jail site and there was also talk of an open-air stadium and redevelopment. But, at the moment, all that's left are ruins and memories.

"It's kind of a shame what happened," said Troost. "But I don't think there was anymore use for it so it's kind of lived out its life I guess."
