In order for Julie Schenecker’s attorneys to use the insanity defense, she had to stipulate that the children who were killed were Calyx and Beau Schenecker, her daughter and son.
When the judge asked her about that Wednesday morning, Schenecker appeared not to understand the question, looking bewildered and confused.
The judge tabled the question until the end of the day so she could consult with her lawyers, and so testimony could continue.
The judge then asked Schenecker about it again around 5:15 after the jury left the room. After a back-and-forth exchange where Schenecker broke down in tears, she did eventually stipulate that Beau and Calyx were the children who were killed.
In between those two moments was a long day filled with powerful testimony that included recorded police interviews right after Schenecker was arrested.

In the recording, Schenecker describes the moment she pulled the gun on her son.
“I was driving, and he said, ‘put that away or I will hit you.’”
That’s when she says she shot him. The detective asked what happened next.
“He was sitting there with his face blown off,” Schenecker said.
She then described walking up behind her daughter and shooting her.
The prosecution rested its case. The defense said it wasn’t ready to begin tomorrow, so the trial is recessed until Friday.
EDITOR'S NOTE: A previous version of the story incorrectly reported that Schenecker had to stipulate to murdering her children. We regret the error.
