Runners Participate In The 35th Annual Broad Street Run

PHILADELPHIA -

From Fisher Avenue, past City Hall and to The Navy Yard, thousands of runners pounded the pavement for the Broad Street Run.

For Tom Leonard just participating was a victory.

"It was always such a high point of the year for me as a runner to participate in this event. And just to be out here, even hobbling along is a great feeling for me.,” he said.

Friends and family flanked the Collingswood resident as he walked the 10 mile course.

The 57-year-old had a stroke two years ago and can no longer run a race he's done at least a dozen times

"No matter what the obstacles, when you have so much support behind you, you can overcome anything,” Leonard said.

Hollie Linville held up words of encouragement for her son and the other athletes making the run.

"It was nice to see people reading them and you could see the smiles and laughs,” she said.

Temperatures were in the upper 50s and low 60s, and coupled will a nice breeze.

Runners said it was perfect conditions for Sunday’s race.

"It's beautiful. I like being hot so it's perfect for me, but it was chilly at the start,” Lauren Seyfried said.

If just running wasn't hard enough, Brian Smith dribbled two basketballs the whole way.

He did so to raise awareness to fight juvenile delinquency.

Plenty of children competed in the run, including 12-year-old Jaison Keels.

"Most of the time I got tired at the 8th or 9th mile, but I kept going because of my friend Demetrius,” Keels said.

Thousands of runners had already crossed the line at the navy yard, as Team Tom continued to march on.

Leonard may not have set the pace with speed, but his finish set the pace with inspiration.

"It feels like the whole city is filled with guardian angels today. It was a great day to be a Philadelphian. It brought out the best in everybody,” he said.

Leonard's courage doesn't stop here.

He wants to come back, stronger than ever.

"I'd love to keep doing it, and hopefully I'll get back to running it and beat my time of 78 minutes,” he said.
