Spartans see season getting off to a great start

TAMPA (FOX 13) -

The University of Tampa baseball team recently won a third straight Sunshine State Conference title, their 16th in team history.

Now, the Spartans stand poised to accomplish their second major goal: hosting the South Regional.

UT baseball works to achieve their ultimate goal this season -- the same goal every season: win another Division II national title.

The Spartans have won six national championships, the latest just last season in 2013.

Many thought this would be a rebuilding season, but this UT team bonded quickly. A baseball-playing trip to Cuba in January helped the new roster gel.

Head coach Joe Urso agrees this team exceeds expectations.

"They do... you know we lost a lot of guys again last year, and you just, you're never quite sure until you get the new group together on how they're gonna gel and the chemistry's amazing,” Urso said. “They told me that in the fall, they said, 'Coach, this group might be as special as last years' group.’ "

Players choose UT baseball with the goal of winning it all.

"It'd be really nice to go out of here with another win, with another championship,” says senior outfielder Zach Gawrych. "We got to feel what it was like last year... it was a great feeling, great experience and hopefully we can do it again this year. It'd be nice going out on top again."
