Woman Survives Tornado By Hiding In Her Bathtub

Posted: Updated:

Baxter Springs, KS- One Kansas woman is lucky to be alive after a powerful tornado tore through her town, and nearly crushed her to death.

82-year-old Buela Thompson says she survived the twister by hiding in her bathtub.

On Sunday, a tornado rolled through Baxter Springs, which injured 25-people and destroyed more than 100 homes and businesses.

Just a few feet away from where Thompson was hiding, the ceiling caved in.

Thompson is still shaken up, but says she's counting her blessings.

“This was my last place,” she said." I didn't wanna move anymore. I really didn't. Now, I don't know what I’m gonna do. "

Thompson says the roof almost sucked her out of the bathtub she was hiding in.

“I could hear the wind blowing and the windows popping out. Maybe, I can make it. Maybe, I can cause I've never been in one of these before. That’s why it was so shocking," said Thompson.

Governor Sam Brownback has declared a state of disaster emergency for Baxter Springs.
