Guns in schools: What the numbers say

Posted: Updated:
TAMPA (FOX 13) -

Guns are ending up on school grounds, buses, and at school events more often than you might think. FOX 13 examined the numbers and, over the past few years in Florida, several hundred firearms have turned up, often times in the hands of kids.

“I just wouldn't think anyone would have a gun, but I guess I'm kind of naive," said Davaron Davis, who was picking up his two small boys at Sam Rampello Magnet School in Tampa.

The most recent records from the 2012-2013 school year show that, statewide, there were 103 incidents involving firearms. The numbers are self-reported by the districts.

Miami-Dade County had the most in the state at 21. Hillsborough County topped the Tampa Bay area at 10. Some of the schools included Alonso High School, Blake High School, Riverview High School, Giunta Middle School, and Sligh Middle School.

A spokesperson for Hillsborough County schools, Steve Hegarty, pointed out to FOX 13 that the district is one of the largest in the nation with several hundred schools and more than 200,000 students.

"Relatively speaking, that's a low number,” said Hegarty. “Of course, one could be a scary situation so we have to take it very seriously."

Pinellas County and Polk County each had four incidents involving a gun during the last school year. Sarasota County Schools had three.

FOX 13 examined the past three academic school years for gun incidents. If you’d like to access that information and you can check on your district or school via the links below.

In addition to guns, the data also includes dozens of other categories, including fighting, bullying, and drug possession.
