Progress Made In Battle Against Fifth Fire In Ocean County

Posted: Updated:
BEACHWOOD, N.J. -

Fire crews in Ocean County are working to put out the last uncontained fire out of five that, at one point Thursday, forced hundreds of people to evacuate their homes.

FOX 29's Drew Dickman reported Friday morning from Berkeley Township that, according to a source, significant progress has been made in the fight against that last fire that crews are working to contain in Beachwood.

The fire is actually behind a tree line, and you cannot see much from the ground, but progress has been made and officials actually opened up the road that runs alongside that early Friday.

There were five total fires Thursday that broke out in this area. Four were contained as of the last official update last night, but one blaze in Berkeley Township was only 50 percent contained.

We're told 621 homes were evacuated at the height of the fire danger. All of those people have since been allowed to go back in their hems. There were no injuries.

There was minor damage to some structures in the area, and authorities had helicopters and planes flying over the scene dumping water to try to get these flames under control.

The fires that are under control are located in Berkeley Township, Toms River, Jackson and Lacey.

Because of those five fires, the causes remain under investigation.

Berkeley Township police had these words of caution Friday for folks driving in the area: "Motorists are reminded that although all roadways are open, a smoke condition is present throughout the area which could affect visibility. Residents are reminded to use caution during their commute as fire crews and police personnel are still actively working on both fires."
