EVESHAM TWP., N.J. - Evesham police are investigating a suspicious package found Thursday morning by an officer that forced a shutdown of the Evesham municipal complex.

At 5:40 a.m., an Evesham police officer located a suspicious package in the lobby area of the Municipal Complex. The suspicious package was addressed to the Evesham municipal court judge and had wires protruding from the side, appearing to be a bomb.

Evesham Police officers immediately evacuated the complex, closed New Road and summoned the New Jersey State Police Bomb Squad. The New Jersey State Police Bomb Squad quickly arrived on location, detonated the package and deemed the device not to be an explosive.

“They detonated the object, determined it was not an explosive, then once they determined it was safe. They brought in the dogs that walked every area of the complex,” Eversham Township Police Lieutenant Joseph Friel said.

Joe Stanley was headed to court with his son when he heard the news.

“What if it really did happen, me and my son innocently getting hurt. What if we ended up dead," Stanley said.

Attorney Ted Costa was on his way to court when he was detoured around the municipal complex.

“It certainly held up hundreds of people. I know I had to waste a few hours of my time,” Costa said.

Police were reviewing several hours of video from the building's surveillance cameras.

“We're gonna follow every lead, and do everything we can to determine who did terrorize our judge,” Lt. Friel said.

Police still reviewing surveillance video, the judge did not want to speak with reporters today.

The municipal complex has since reopened.

This is an ongoing investigation and anyone who has information is asked to contact the Evesham Police Department at 856-983-1116 or the confidential tip line at 856-983-4699.
