More charges, new arrests in death of Citrus County baby

TAMPA (FOX 13) -

New charges have been filed against a man accused of killing his baby so he could continue playing video games, and there's also been two more arrests.

Citrus County detectives say when they investigated the death of the 1-year-old boy, they found the home was filthy and infested with roaches.

Now, they say a baby girl in the home was also a victim of abuse.

Cody Wygant, 24, was arrested last week and charged with murder. Deputies say he confessed to suffocating his baby because he was crying and couldn't concentrate on his Xbox.

With the baby not breathing, deputies say he played video games and watched TV for a few hours. Last night, deputies added charges of child neglect causing great bodily harm because of a 3-month-old girl also living in the home.

Jessika Dufour, 22, and Geneva Dufour, 55, also face charges.

Deputies say the baby girl had "flat head syndrome" from being left in a crib for extended periods of time. She had a skin infection that covered her body and caused tissue damage.

Deputies say people were probably aware of the abuse but didn't report it.

"It’s very frustrating," Lt. Brad Smith said. "We always encourage that if you know anything is going on, please call us so that we can take care of it before something tragic like this happens."

The baby girl was rushed to the ICU at Shands Hospital in Gainesville.

She's doing better and is now in foster care. Deputies say the death of the baby boy is tragic, but thankfully, they rescued the girl in time.

"If we would've had some kind of record we could've been looking into it, maybe the child could've been removed from the custody of the parents beforehand," Smith said.
