Family of teen shot and killed by police sues NYC

Posted: Updated:

NEW YORK (AP) - The family of a 16-year-old Brooklyn boy whose fatal shooting by police last year sparked days of protests has filed a federal wrongful death lawsuit against New York City.

Kimani "Kiki" Gray's mother and sister allege in the lawsuit filed Friday that officers used unreasonable force in the March 2013 shooting. They also say Gray was denied medical care that might've saved his life. They're seeking unspecified damages.

Police have said they approached the teen because he was acting suspiciously. They say he then pointed a .38-caliber revolver at the plainclothes officers. He was hit seven times in his front and back.

Gray's family alleges his death was a result of city policy that stopped people based on race.

The Law Department didn't respond to a request for comment.
