Animal Rescue Shelter Says Bunnies Often Dumped After Easter

Posted: Updated:
It may seem like a cute idea for a present but many bunnies don't make it after they're given as Easter gifts.

So, volunteers at a non- profit organization in Arizona take matters into their own hand.

And each of these sweet faces comes with a story.

“She was abandoned in the middle of the night in a shoe box” recalls Kelly Ames.

Ames continues, "this is Maya and Parker and they were actually being kept outside in a cage in the middle of summer when they were just babies."

Kelley Ames is the Executive Director at Tranquility Trail, one of three rabbit rescues in Arizona.

Volunteers for the non- profit care for more than seventy rabbits here.

They expect to get many calls after Easter Sunday.

"A lot of them are dumped outside where they can't survive. These guys are domestic bunnies or they end up in the shelter system. We get over one hundred calls every month from people who don't want their bunnies because they didn't do their research."

Ames hopes more families will choose to give stuffed toy and chocolate bunnies if they don't plan to care for a real one for their life span of ten-to-twelve years.

"They make wonderful pets, but they're not the right choice for everybody,” declares Ames.

If you'd like a companion but you're not ready for the commitment you can actually come into tranquility trail any day of the week. you can play with the bunnies and  help them get used to people

“They get more relaxed and (on cam) sometimes I fall asleep when I pet them,” says Primula Nevel.

Volunteer bunny hugger, Primula Nevel, has been cuddling these cuties for four-and-a-half years.

"I think it’s very satisfying to spend time with them because they're so appreciative of it,” says Nevel.
