Contractors ward off attacker after his gun misfires

Posted: Updated:
DETROIT (WJBK) - Three contractors from Taylor were working to restore a property on Detroit's west side Wednesday when they were confronted by a gunman, according to police.

Two brothers and a friend were parked in their work van near Joy and Southfield roads when they say a man walked towards the vehicle from behind. The man pulled out a gun, pointed it at the van and fired multiple times but the gun misfired.

The driver of the van then attempted to maneuver the vehicle away from the gunman, but police say the gunman smashed the passenger-side window, then jumped on the back of the van and smashed the back window, too.

One of the brothers says when he saw the gunman coming through the window, he jumped on him. The other brother got out of the van and began striking the gunman with a bat.

The brothers say when the gunman was dislodged from the back window, he ran towards them so they struck him again with the bat. That's when a car pulled up and the person, or persons, inside helped the gunman into the vehicle and drove off.

Before taking off, however, the gunman accidentally dropped his gun and wallet inside the van when trying to get through the window.

Having his information, Detroit police have apprehended the gunman and say he is in custody.

One brother tells FOX 2's Andrea Isom they feel they've done a "big justice" to the city. "I feel like we took a gun that's been involved in robbery, maybe involved in murders, we took a gun and a criminal off the street."
