TAMPA (FOX 13) -

A disabled veteran's service dog is missing after a car crash Thursday night.

The accident happened at Causeway Blvd and U.S. 41, and sent Luke Macner to the hospital with a broken collarbone.

"Nina," an adult German Shepherd, was in the car in the passenger seat when the crash happened.

"The passenger window slid sideways and down, and she jumped out," Macner said.

Macner and Nina had just been paired on Thursday after a weeks-long application process.

Macner, who lost a leg and uses a wheelchair, was paired with Nina through Pets for Patriots. Nina is a wheelchair-trained service dog, and Macner said they met Wednesday and bonded right away.

Now, Macner is hospitalized with head and neck injuries. He is expected to recover, but in the meantime, he says he's distraught that Nina is missing.

Macner says Nina is wearing a lime-green collar, a red rabies tag and had her leash on when she escaped.

Anyone has seen her can contact Kate Trujillo at 609-575-7709.
