WYANDOTTE, Mich. (WJBK) - A special needs student is recovering after his family believes he was physically abused by a staff member at school.

Antonio Anderson says his 13-year-old son, Terrell, has cerebral palsy and does not speak. Terrell has attended the Madison Special Education Center in Wyandotte for the last six years.

On Wednesday, Anderson received a call from the school's superintendent informing him an incident involving a staff member and his son had taken place. Anderson was told a different staff member walked in and witnessed Terrell being lifted into the air by his arms, and was being shaken and shouted by the other staff member.

Antonio says he was shocked because he has met the staff member in question before and described him as a "nice guy." He has been placed on leave while the district investigates the allegations.

This statement was released by the Superintendent of Wyandotte School District, Dr. Carla Harding:

"On April 16, 2014, the District received a complaint regarding the manner in which a District teacher responded to a student behavior in the classroom. The District immediately commenced an investigation into the allegations and removed the teacher from the classroom. The teacher has been placed on leave pending the conclusion of the District's investigation. At the same time, the District also contacted the appropriate authorities and contacted the parent of the involved student to advise of the situation and the District's response.
In addition to conducting its own inquiry into the allegations, the District intends to fully cooperate with the responding authorities in any investigation they conduct. In order to respect the privacy of the student, however, the District will not have any further statement until it has completed its investigation.
As evidenced by the District's response to this situation, the safety of all District students is the top priority of the Wyandotte Public Schools."

Terrell was taken to the hospital and has fractures in both of his shoulders. He may need to be placed in a shoulder-to-shoulder cast.

Antonio says if the staff member had not walked in the situation could have been worse.
