It's fair to say Ronda Faye Allen won't be winning grandmother of the year.
Allen turned herself in to Plant City police Thursday morning after hundreds of tips came in from people who saw a video on FOX 13 and MyFoxTampaBay.com. The footage shows a woman coaxing her granddaughter to steal a donation jar right off the checkout counter and hide it in the shopping cart.
Those donations were meant for 15-year-old Jenny Villanueva, who is battling Lupus. Her mother, Mildred Diaz, said she couldn't believe how quickly the woman was caught.
"That's sad. That's really sad. I mean, how could you even call yourself a mother -- let alone a grandmother -- show your granddaughter how to steal? Where's her mother?"
The video sparked outrage on our Facebook page, where viewers posted hundreds of comments expressing their disgust, while simultaneously flooding the police department with tips.
An hour after the video was first shown on FOX 13, police say they knew who the woman was. And they know her well -- Allen, 49, has been arrested several times, on prostitution and theft charges.
But now this grandmother is in big trouble for using her grandchild to commit a crime.
"People just recognized the lady and justice has been done," added Diaz.
