Allergies And Pink Eye Hitting Everyone Earlier And Harder

Posted: Updated:

The symphony of misery. Yes, it's hitting a lot of us earlier and worse than any we might remember.

"This one's awful," says Marykate Miller.

Two of Miller's three sons have pink eye and their regular allergies are soaring.  They weren't ready for this so early in the season

"My other son, if he's outside playing a little bit, his eyes are awful looking, red itchy runny," says Mary Kate Miller.

"It started a month ago and I never had allergies so I'm like, what is this," says Kevin Kennedy.

Kevin Kennedy came into Wills Eye expecting he had something like pink eye.

Kennedy explains, "Red and watery and it felt like somebody was sticking their claws in my eye."

But it was not pink eye. It was his first ever allergy attack.

He's one of many, doctors say they're seeing for whom relief is as simple as:

-Wearing wrap around glasses outside to block blowing allergens

-Applying  a cold compress to calm the itch and swelling

-Using more artificial tears not so much eye washes that may dry natural oils and cause more redness.

"It just essentially flushes the eye a little bit and can reduce their symptoms. You don't need prescription medications for it to really help allergy sufferers," explains Dr. Kammi Gunton.

Doctor Kammi Gunton expects both pink eye and rampany allergies to get worse in upcoming weeks.

Insurance policies have rules governing what's covered and what's not. Generally, they make sense. The rules are designed to prevent unreasonable costs from being passed along to the insurer, and by extension to other insurance customers. But listen to Sheree Kober's story.
