Bucs revive classic, dominating defense

Posted: Updated:
TAMPA (FOX 13) -

The Tampa 2 is back, a defense that was so dominating it was named after the team that put their own stamp on it.

That famous Buccaneer Tampa 2 is back under Head Coach Lovie Smith. He was a linebacker coach on the team that started that dominating run back in 1996, so what's old is new again.

The key to the Tampa 2 defense is the under tackle position, or what the Bucs call the 3 technique. And that doesn't mean a position technique, it means position placement, where the player lines up.

It's the critical position, a position that Warren Sapp played so well he ended up in the Hall of Fame.

Now, the Bucs want Gerald McCoy to play the 3 technique. In the 3 technique, lines up shaded to the guard's outside shoulder, ready to shoot the B-gap on his side of the formation -- through schemes and shifts, the under tackle or 3 technique is the one who should be racking up big sack numbers.

Warren Sapp did it, along with John Randle, Keith Millard is another one who used that slot to become an impact player.

So the Bucs defensive secret is out -- the Tampa 2 is back, but the question is, why release the news now?

Why not keep teams guessing a bit, keep the mystery in it? Gerald McCoy tells us "in the Tampa 2 players don't care that you know what's coming, the defense has to be so dominating, we let you know what we're going to do and then go out and do it."

That's certainly how the Bucs Tampa 2 under Tony Dungy and Monte Kiffin got it done. So now the team's identity is back, let's see if it again can create another dominating defense.

On the offensive side of the ball, what the Bucs are doing with new offensive coordinator Jeff Tedford is a complete mystery and the Bucs want to keep it that way.

Buccaneer quarterback Josh McCown tells us in the NFL, surprise can be an edge, so this offense wants to keep as much of it under wraps as possible.

"This offense will be a mystery for maybe the first two or three games of the season and that will be an edge," McCown says. "But after that start, it will be business as usual in terms of game preparation because teams will have tape".

The Bucs are in OTA's right now. They are on the field next Tuesday, the 22nd for their first mini-camp.
