Police have arrested a Polk County teacher who allegedly carried on a sexual relationship with a teenage student, professed that she loved him and even became pregnant.
"She had no remorse," said Sgt. Gary Gross of the Lakeland Police Department. "Her response was, 'I am in love with a 17-year-old.' "
According to investigators, the victim's mother discovered the relationship after spotting text messages between her 17-year-old son and a woman who turned out to be his English teacher, Jennifer Christine Fichter.
The teen's mother invited Fichter over to discuss the messages. It was then, according to the victim's mother, that Fichter admitted to several sexual encounters in her car and even professed her love for the teen.
Police say Fichter, 29, is a teacher at the Central Florida Aerospace Academy in Lakeland. She faces six charges of unlawful sexual activity with a minor.
On Tuesday, as news broke, opinions began coming out.
"They can't ever investigate someone 100%. You think your children are safe at school, but maybe they aren't always," Debbie Carter, a mom on the way to pick up her son at the Academy, said.
Fitchter allegedly told investigators that she became pregnant with the teen's child and had an abortion.
Investigators from Hillsborough County are also involved because some of the alleged encounters happened there, too.
