Retiring MacDill K-9 honored for saving unit

TAMPA (FOX 13) -

A bomb-sniffing dog from Tampa has retired with full military honors.

'Eddie' has had a remarkable military career. He's assigned to MacDill's 6th Security Forces Squadron and he's served for about five years.

Eddie, a Belgian Malinois, helped track down Taliban insurgents. In 2012, he found two improvised explosive devices, a discovery that saved the lives of his patrol unit.

"It was a high-stress moment," recalled his partner, Staff Sgt. Shannon Hutto.

Hutto says watching him leave the forces is incredibly emotional, even for Hutto's children.

"Every time we go up to the kennels they have to see him, they just want to look at him for a little bit," he explained. "They know what he's done, even though they don't understand it fully, they know that Daddy came home because of this dog and this dog is special to them as much as me."

Now that he's retiring, Eddie will be reunited with his first handler, Andrew Grymes.
