The Coast Guard in Clearwater saved an egret that was found struggling in the water.
Officials said crews aboard the Broad on the Bow spotted the egret just west of the north end of the Clearwater Harbor Marina.
At first, crew members thought it might be debris in the water, but as they approached the object, they realized it was a young egret struggling to keep its head above water.
It's unclear how the animal, which prefers to wade in shallow areas, got so far from shore.
The egret was brought to Gulf Coast Bird Rescue, where doctors treated it for hypothermia. Despite a long night, the egret was doing well, officials said Thursday.
