NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

A nearly $100,000 BMW left a path of destruction in the Bushwick section of Brooklyn.

The driver hit and killed a 46-year-old man riding a bicycle at the intersection of Broadway and Halsey Street just before 8 a.m. Wednesday.

The victim has been identified as Angel Torres, 46, of Myrtle Ave. iin Brooklyn.

After the accident, the driver sped up Boyland Street going the wrong way and crashed into a black Toyota 4-Runner near Chauncey Street.

Tessa Rush ran downstairs and found her brother Allen Rush and his 18-year-old daughter in the crunched-up SUV. Allen Rush had just backed out of the garage to take his daughter to school. They were both taken to Kings County Hospital.

"He might have a broken shoulder," Tessa Rush said of her brother. "I'm glad he's still alive. Thank God for that."

The driver of the BMW ran off before police got to the scene.

Investigators from the 73rd Precinct and NYPD Highway Division are looking over surveillance footage for information that will lead them to an arrest.

Every day, those who live and work in the Gowanus section of Brooklyn drive and bike and walk across their canal, growing a little more accustomed to but no less disgusted by its scent and appearance. Once the busiest canal in the United States, the Gowanus now bears the distinction as perhaps the most polluted body of water in the nation. No one knows exactly how polluted because few have summoned enough courage to dive into its murky depths to investigate.
