How to prevent pothole problems

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA, Ga. -

Even though it's been months since those winter ice storms, many of your roads and interstates are still being repaired from the damage those storms caused. There are still hundreds of pot holes around metro Atlanta and your car could be really taking a hit.

Of course you try to avoid driving over those pot holes when you can, but sometimes you just can't steer away from them and if you're not on top of it, you could face expensive repairs to your vehicle.

We've all hit the giant pot holes that plague the ride around town.

"Since I usually travel the same roads, I kind of know where they are. I'm like, okay, 'put hole coming up so I need to go right or go left," laughs Atlanta driver Antavious Coates. "Sometimes at night you may not see it, or it will come up on you too fast and you'll have to go right through it, hit your brakes. It's very dangerous though."

And local mechanics at Firestone have seen an increase in damage since the two ice storms earlier this year left behind hundreds of weak roads and pot holes. "It's going to cause a lot of damage to your tires. Number one, it's going to cause a lot of cars that were in good, proper alignment to now need an alignment," says Firestone District Manager George Kingman.

The trauma from hitting pot holes can leave behind some easy to spot damage "It actually cracked the wheel, so now unfortunately they're going to have to buy a new wheel and tire," shows off Kingman.

But it can also cause less obvious problems. "We just had a customer, had no idea there was a problem, driving down the road and the wheel literally came off because the ball join had broken. She had no idea the damage under her car and it could have turned into an accident," Kingman explains.

Mechanics encourage you to get a spring car care checkup, and make sure to have them check your alignment. "You can see, sometime in the recent past his strut has bottomed out and it's actually caused part of his frame to bend," Kingman points out the bent frame.

Poor alignment or other small issues can easily turn into pricy problems. "You want to make sure that you don't have anything underlying that you have no idea about," adds Kingman.

The experts say tire pressure is also very important. If you're losing air pressure, then you won't have as much support when you do hit rough patches or pot holes. That's something easy you can check yourself.
