LAKELAND (FOX 13) -

Polk County deputies say they have identified skeletal remains that were found along a road in Lakeland last year as a missing 33-year-old woman.

For months, forensics teams have been looking for answers after a man searching for scrap metal stumbled across a box in a wooded area off North Wabash Avenue, between Memorial Boulevard and Crutchfield Road.

Inside the box were a human skull and some bones.

Now, Sheriff Grady Judd says DNA testing by the University of North Texas has matched the remains to Mary Elizabeth Rhodes of Lakeland, who was last seen alive in April 2012.

Her cause of death has not yet been determined, but deputies are calling it suspicious.

If anyone has information about Rhodes' disappearance or her death, they are urged to contact Heartland Crime Stoppers at 1-800-226-TIPS (8477).
