Somber day as students return to school following fatal accident

Posted: Updated:

Students at Ridgewood High School in New Port Richey are returning to school today with a horrible reality.

Several of their classmates were involved in a terrible car accident Friday night. Troopers say 16-year-old Kevin Monaco slammed his Dodge minivan into a tree, with it bursting into flames.

Monaco was killed, while three others were taken to the hospital. The passengers were identified as: 16-year-old Jamie Florio, 17-year-old Michael Morgan, and 16-year-old Megan Kahn.

The crash happened on Forest Lake Drive, and a witness told us the passenger side was caught in flames.

"They were begging to get them out, just saying get the doors open, it's hot; please get us out of here," Jennifer Paige told FOX 13.

Experts are at the school this morning to help everyone cope with the sudden loss. There's still no word on what caused Monaco to hit the tree.

At last check, Florio was in serious condition at Tampa General Hospital. Morgan was in serious condition at Bayonet Point. Kahn suffered minor injuries.
