Two men are wanted by authorities for stealing a pair of American Red Cross Donation boxes from a Circle K in Tampa, the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office said Friday.
The suspects, caught on surveillance cameras committing the crime Thursday, were in the store for less than five minutes.
The video shows one of the men taking the first donation box after the cashier had walked away for a moment. About a minute later the same man, who had left he store briefly, walked back in and took the second donation box while the cashier was distracted.
"It just seems so incredibly low and unfortunate that someone would stoop to that level to steal from people that need that assistance," said Cristal Bermudez-Nunez, a spokesperson with the sheriff's office. "The money was going to be going into someone's hands that really needed it and not into a criminal's hands."
"We need that money to support the families that are going though a big emergency right there, they're losing their home in a fire," added Janet McGuire, with the American Red Cross. "It could be anybody's neighbor. It could your own home. That money is something that we really need because that's about the only way we get our money is through donations."
The suspects are described by deputies as follows:
- Black male, 40-50 years of age, 5'10"-6'2" and thin build. Last seen wearing a tan dress shirt, tan dress pants, a tan hat and brown loafers.
- Black male, 30-40 years of age, 5'7"-5"11" and 210-240 lbs. Last seen wearing a black and white striped polo shirt, black dress pants and black shoes.
Anyone with information about the suspects is asked to call the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office at (813) 247-8200 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-873-TIPS (8477).
