Mother accused of starving teens appears in court

TAMPA (FOX 13) -

Jaime Hicks and her husband were back in court facing four more charges for allegedly abusing and neglecting most of their eight children.

Last week, Hicks was arrested for starving and abusing her 16-year-old twin boys.

Investigators said she choked them to the point of unconsciousness, made them eat moldy food and forced them to eat their own vomit.

Now, investigators say her two other boys, ages 12 and 13, also showed signs of abuse.

Neighbor Alloysius Tyson shakes his head in disbelief.

"That's crazy. Too bad nobody can do that to them and get away with it," Tyson said.

The children's stepfather Vernon Lovell knew about the abuse, police say, but never reported it.

The parents are members of the Deeper Life Church in Tampa.

A worshiper who did not want to share his name says lies are being said about them.

"One thing about the truth, you can suppress the truth. The truth will be revealed," the supporter said.

But others in the community like Arthur Springer say it is hard to stomach the thought of a mother accused of hurting her kids and then heading off to church on Sunday.
