Today, Tampa philanthropist David Straz (a Republican who backed Rick Scott in 2010) endorsed Charlie Crist.
He cited Governor Rick Scott's failure to expand state Medicaid as one of the key reasons he is endorsing Crist.
As Crist accepted the endorsement at Tampa's Straz Center for the Performing Arts, he also attacked Governor Scott for failing to expand the state health care program.
"Every single day, if you don't go ahead and get this Medicaid expansion done, people are getting sick, and they're getting sicker, and some will die," said Crist. "People who need health care the most -- about a million of our fellow Floridians - don't get health care today because he didn't lift a finger to get it done. "
The Affordable Care Act called for states to expand state Medicaid to cover people who cannot afford private insurance. But in Florida, state leaders blocked the expansion.
Gov. Scott initially opposed the expansion, then changed his position and announced his support for it last year. He has since rarely discussed the Medicaid expansion. But today Scott's office sent us a statement confirming he still supports it.
"Governor Scott's position has not changed. He is committed to ensuring that Floridians have greater access to high-quality health care and he will continue to urge the President and leaders in Washington to stop the devastating cuts to Medicare Advantage that could impact 1.3 million Florida seniors," - Jackie Schutz, Press Secretary, Gov. Rick Scott.
