Little kids usually get a big thrill when they see a train coming down the tracks. Winter Haven officials are getting a rush for another reason. They see economic development coming their way.
After seven years of planning, the CSX hub in Winter Haven opened Wednesday. Trains will leave the hub with goods bound for destinations all over the country.
The hub is only phase one of the proposed development in that area. The hub is north of State Road 60 off Rifle Range Road.
An office park with lots of warehouse spaced is planned to be built next to the hub. Together, economic development officials expect to see 8,500 new jobs.
Many people in Lakeland are less excited. They will have to deal with four more trains each day running through downtown.
Darrious Byrd sees a bad situation getting worse.
"You can't hear nothing," Darrious Byrd said. "If a train comes right now, all you're going to hear is ‘honnnkkk!' "
