No, Publix is not opening standalone sub shops

TAMPA (FOX 13) -

Did you hear that Publix is opening standalone sub shops to compete with Subway?

Well…they're not.

A south Florida blog published a very realistic-reading post saying Publix had plans to "officially enter the sub business with independent stand alone shops."

It quoted CEO William E. Crenshaw, and spelled out detailed plans to take over locations where competitors like Quiznos had closed their doors.

The Twitterverse lit up.

"@Publix to open stand-alone sub shop? Please don't be April Fools. Please don't be April Fools," one customer wrote.

"Please let the sub shop be true," another wrote.

But the social media team at Publix quickly shot down the rumor.

"...currently we don't have plans for a stand alone sub station. That would be pretty neat, wouldn't it?" one reply said.

"'s a joke from a Miami-area blog," another explained.

Interestingly, though, some of the store's responses seemed to keep the possibility open.

"Maybe one day," the store told one shopper.
