It's been nearly a year since 3-year-old Ireland Nugent lost both of her legs when her dad, Jerry, accidentally ran over her with a lawnmower.
Her recovery has been incredible.
"Looking back, it's been the fastest and slowest year, kind of combined," Nicole Nugent, Ireland's mom, said.
Both Jerry and Nicole try not to focus on the pain their family has endured the past year.
Instead, they celebrate Ireland's remarkable recovery.
"I almost feel like I should be mourning something. I should be mourning, but in a way I'm so proud of her and how far she's come," Nicole said.
Just two months after the accident, Ireland took her first steps with new prosthetic legs.
Nicole said Ireland has been playing with kids in the neighborhood since then, somewhat oblivious to what happened.
"She is really what has gotten me – and I think this whole family – through it because she doesn't know any different. She doesn't remember the accident. She doesn't speak of the accident," Nicole said.
On Saturday, the family will host a golf tournament at Lansbrook Golf Club to help Ireland's recovery.
"It's like a celebration of her life," Jerry Nugent said. "'Surviv-aversary' we're calling it."
Jerry said this tournament is about remembering an accident, and it will help to focus on the future instead of dwelling on the past.
