Westampton Police Officer Helps Deliver Baby

Posted: Updated:

Westampton Police Officer Marc Scherzer responded to a call on Saturday for a medical emergency, which involved a pregnant woman.

When Scherzer arrived at the house he heard screams, and he raced upstairs where he found the soon-to-be-mom on the bathroom floor.

"I was gonna try and move Miss Patterson out of the doorway, as I tried to move her I could see the baby's head," Scherzer said.

When Westampton Emergency Services arrived, Scherzer and the EMTs sprung into action.

"We waited for another contraction, and the baby came right out. Julian clamped the cord, he cleared the baby's airway, we heard the baby cry, and everyone was very relieved it went very smooth," Scherzer explained.

Shahira Patterson was relieved when she heard her new baby girl cry and then it hit her.

"I can't believe I just had my baby in the bathroom," Patterson said.

But thanks to Scherzer it happened, and he's not a veteran at delivering babies either.

"That's the first time for me, I don't have kids that was the first time I had been in anything like that, very exciting," Scherzer said.

Exciting for the EMTs as well who don't do this all the time either.

"It's not very often that you come up and they say the baby's coming and you end up delivering in a house versus a hospital, so this is definitely a first for me," Westampton EMT Julian Vallery said.

The new mom is thankful for the thoughtful actions of both men.

They were very endearing, very caring, and it was very personable," said Patterson, "They made me feel safe."

Mom and baby are doing fine. They are expected to be released from the hospital soon and Officer Scherzer says he will be visiting the baby at home soon, and will watch her grow up.
