An open skate was held Saturday and Arctic Edge ice arena was packed with warmth during a benefit for the Demaggio family. Earlier this month, Carri Demaggio, the mother of a young hockey player, lost a 7-year battle with breast cancer. She left behind her husband, Mike, and three children.

As Fox 2 reported a few days ago, Carri's 7 year old son, Dominic, and a fellow player, Theo, 8, bonded because Theo also lost his mom, Amy, to breast cancer in 2012.

"I can talk to Theo and Theo can talk to me," Dominic told Fox 2 during the event. "We both know what it's like to have this happen."

The boys, now close friends, were by each others side during the benefit which included an open skate, hot dogs, drinks, a 50-50 raffle and silent auction. Dom's father, Mike, was also there talking about how the friendship and hockey have helped his son through this hard time.

"I think it gave Dominic a safe place to talk about things," Mike said. "Where he didn't feel judged or that anybody was scared or concerned about what he was saying - 'cause Theo already knew what Dominic was saying. For Theo, it helped confirm a lot of things that he felt."

It even turns out the mothers of the boys both knew each other. Both modeled for the fundraiser "Bras for a Cause."

Steve Taraszkiewicz coaches the Victory Honda House Mites. He organized the event to show how much the community cares.

"I have a 7 year old and those kids act like adults talking about what's going on in their life," the coach told Fox 2. "I couldn't imagine my 7 year old going through that."

All of the money that's raised will go to the Demaggio family to help with medical expenses.
