Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office arrest five gang members in investigation known as "Operation Surrender."
Detectives say the suspects are all part of the "Sur 13" gang.
Five of them were arrested on Tuesday. Two more were already in jail for other crimes and now face additional charges.
Investigators say they targeted the gang members responsible for the most violent of crimes, including drive-by shootings, armed robberies, and carjackings.
Detectives tracked them down in Plant City, Seffner, Dover and the western part of Polk County.
Colonel Donna Lusczynski, with the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office, says those arrested are some of the local leaders of Sur 13 and their arrests should send a message to other gang members.
"They're typically the ones those other gang members look up to. They're the self-appointed leaders. They're the ones committing the most violent crimes," Lusczynski said. "So if we show that we can put them behind bars -- those that they consider untouchable -- we're hoping as well that it will deter those others in the group from committing future acts."
The sheriff's office says Sur 13 has about 300 members in Hillsborough County.
These arrests come a few months after deputies rounded up 11 members of the "Norte 14," a rival gang.
Authorities say they plan to arrest one more gang member as part of this roundup, but these arrests could lead to more down the road.
