Orion Twp. to build special needs playground

Posted: Updated:
ORION TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WJBK) - Orion Township is preparing to break ground on a new playground, but as you'll see, this one is going to be a little different. The goal of the new design is to make sure all kids can play.

The playground will be catered more towards children with special needs.

Last summer 12-year-old Alayna was diagnosed with leukemia. She'll never walk again because of complications from chemotherapy, so the average playground isn't really accessible to her.

She joined several families Wednesday to welcome and learn of the plans for the new playground.

"Seeing she's not the only one in her condition, that there's other kids, and people are not afraid to be around her - it's very inspiring for her," says Alayna's mother.

The playground will include two fully accessible wheelchair swings, a Jam Box and a variety of auto-sensory elements that will allow children to have fun while improving physical, sensory and cognitive abilities. Construction is expected to begin this summer. The area will also include a garden that is accessible by wheelchair.

The goal is to create an environment to help all children play and learn.

"By getting on the swings and being able to do things that normal, typical children can do gives her a lot of hope," says her mother.

The 'Let Them Play' playground will be built at Friendship Park on West Clarkson Road.

Orion Township and local nonprofit, Sister Souls Inc. are selling bricks, benches and birdhouses to raise the $50,000 dollars to make it happen.
