George Lopez says he's done drinking after recent arrest

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) - The gossip websites had a field day with a photo of comedian George Lopez passed out, lying faced down on a casino floor after a night of heavy drinking.

The Los Angeles native was arrested in Canada in February for public intoxication.

"I'm doing better than the night I drank the last time. Since I got up I haven't had a drop of alcohol nor do I intend to. When you're down on the ground like that and you get up you know you're on a path to destruction. Alcohol can be great in moderation. But if you are a person who uses it to numb or to avoid situations it's not good for you," said Lopez.

The 52-year-old joked that despite his troubles he's "on the road to saint hood."

Lopez stars in the new FX series 'Saint George' airing Thursdays at 9 p.m. on FX.

The show is loosely based on Lopez's life.

"It's about a guy who created an energy drink called La Energia, got divorced and lost everything. He's trying to get back in the dating world as his ex-wife starts dating," said Lopez.

As one of the most popular and successful comedians in the world it's almost hard to believe Lopez struggles with every day people problems.

"I've got troubles, issues, concerns, meeting women, protecting your money, there are a lot of things. All the imperfections make for great comedy. 'Saint George' is a lot of the stories of my life," said Lopez.

He wants to put his arrest and that "horrible night" behind him.

"I have a guy that I talk to, a counselor of addiction. I talk to Slash (former guitarist for Guns N'Roses) he's been a friend of mine and he's been dry for several years," said Lopez.

"Modern Family" won a record-tying fifth best comedy series Emmy Award and a dominant "Breaking Bad" captured the top drama award and a trio of acting honors in Monday's ceremony, which took a somber turn as Robin Williams was remembered with restraint and grace by his longtime friend, Billy Crystal. "He made us laugh. Hard. Every time you saw him," Crystal said of Williams.
