Dog set on fire brought to Tampa to heal

TAMPA (FOX 13) -

A dog that was set on fire last week is now being cared for in Tampa.

The 1-year-old mixed breed is named "Hope," and she's in bad shape.

She was reportedly set on fire last week by her owner in Arcadia.

She was brought to a Blue Pearl trauma center in Tampa to get the critical care she needs.

Vets say despite it all, she's in good spirits but has weeks, if not months, of recovery ahead.

"She won't be normal, ever. She'll have significant scarring, she has a long road ahead of her, including numerous surgeries she's going to need down the road, as well as a long term healing for her skin," said Dr. John Gicking.

Gicking estimates there are burns on 60 to 70 percent of Hope's body. Her eyes were burned, so it remains to be seen how her vision will be affected.

They say they are doing their best to keep her comfortable with analgesic medicine.

So far, authorities have not charged Hope's owner.
