One North Port Police officer has been arrested and another is dead after allegations that they sexually assaulted a woman at a party earlier this month.
According to the Sarasota County Sheriff's Office, the two officers, a man and a woman, were involved in the sexual battery on March 2.
They initially did not release the names of the officers.
Thursday, the sheriff's office identified them as Ricky Urbina and Melanie Turner and issued warrants for their arrests.
The sheriff's office said there was an agreement that detectives would notify the two officers of their pending arrests ahead of time.
Turner was arrested Thursday and taken into custody without incident. Urbina, though, is a much different story: detectives agreed to meet him, then later got word that he was dead from a shooting at his home.
The sheriff's office said his death is under investigation. However, the Sarasota Herald Tribune is reporting that Urbina committed suicide.
According to arrest affidavits for Urbina and Turner, the two attended a birthday party where Urbina put handcuffs on the victim. Urbina and Turner then led the victim to a bedroom and closed the door.
According to the affidavits, the victim thought their "actions were merely party fun and that she would be released."
But then they groped her, took her pants off, and sexually violated her, the report said.
The victim told two off-duty police officers who were attending the party what happened, and they contacted a police supervisor, the affidavits said.
Turner is charged with sexual battery and false imprisonment.
