Seagulls can sometimes get annoying at the beach, but police say an Illinois man went too far while apparently trying to chase away the ubiquitous beach bums.
Ryan David Lesle of Western Springs, Illinois was arrested on animal cruelty charges Thursday for beating a seagull with part of a beach umbrella.
Police in Clearwater say the 21-year-old used the lower pole part of an umbrella to swing at a flock of seagulls flying near him and his friends south of Pier 60. He allegedly struck and injured one of the birds, then used the pole again to try to put the bird out of its misery.
Someone from a local veterinary facility responded and had to euthanize the bird, police said.
