APD officer fired after allegations of drinking on job

Posted: Updated:

The Atlanta Police Department has fired one officer and launched an investigation into a second officer after allegations that they had been drinking only hours before they reported to work during the February snow storm.

Both officers were assigned to Zone 6 in East Atlanta.

In one incident, FOX's 5 Morse Diggs reports Chief George Turner fired officer Joel Priest.

A zone manager yanked Priest from roll call due to alcohol allegedly being on his breath.

A test showed Priest's blood alcohol content was 0.11 - more than the legal limit for citizens driving a car.

In a separate incident, another officer reportedly struck a mailbox with a police vehicle.

Atlanta Police officials suspect alcohol may have played a part in the accident, and immediately took the officer off the street.

They have launched an internal affairs probe of the incident.

Atlanta City Councilman Michael Bond said he backs the tough stand taken by Chief Turner to hand down the toughest discipline, which in Officer Priest's case, was termination.
