The Polk Sheriff's Office just made a cosmic bust. They say they broke up a major methamphetamine ring in which the two top people would not make a move without first consulting a voodoo priest.
"They talked to their voodoo priest constantly, and that gave them the reassurance that everything was all right," said Sheriff Grady Judd on Wednesday, the day after the arrests went down.
Thirteen people were taken to jail; another 11 had warrants on them.
Investigators say the kingpin, Javier Flores, is known as the "Don," and lives in California. He is still on the run. His local gal Friday, Ma Concepcion Lopez, who runs the Central Florida operation, was arrested in Lakeland where she lives.
Detectives hauled in an amazing amount of firepower, including dozens of guns.
"Semiautomatics, silencers, a grenade launcher," said Mark Touville, of the Drug Enforcement Agency. "Folks, that is more long arms than most police department have in the U.S."
Undercover detectives also seized meth with a street value of $8 million.
The drugs allegedly came from Mexico to Los Angeles to Atlanta to here. The meth was the purest and most dangerous form of the drug, known as ice.
