Teenager critical after overnight fire at Tampa condo complex

TAMPA (FOX 13) -

Several residents of a north Tampa condominium complex are out of their homes after a fire broke out.

It happened at the Whisper Lake Condos off Dale Mabry and Humphrey at 3849 South Lake Drive and left a teenage girl in critical condition.

The fire appears to have started on the third floor; flames were shooting from the roof when FOX 13 crews arrived. Firefighters say a total of six units sustained severe fire, smoke and water damage.

In total, 12 people have been displaced from their home. Firefighters were able to get the blaze under control eventually.

"When we opened the door, the smoke hit me in the face. At that point, I hit my knees," resident Darren Muley said. "I didn't know what was going on, but I figured I better get out of there.  I grabbed Stan the Man (cat), and we headed out the door and couldn't see anything."

What remains unclear is how the fire started. Investigators are still on scene and should prove more updates this morning.

FOX 13's Alcides Segui is at the scene. Stay with us for any updates.
