Winter Haven investigators seek tips in homeless man's murder

Posted: Updated:

The search for suspects in a homeless man's death in Winter Haven is intensifying.

Tuesday, detectives put signs out in places where homeless people congregate. They show the face of James Stewart and the Crimestoppers number.

Stewart was killed a little more than two weeks ago in Inman Park, possibly when he was sleeping. Although police are not releasing many details about the murder, a reliable source tells FOX 13 Stewart was stabbed to death.

"The guy was a good guy," Ken Guffy told us. Guffy works at a local shelter and social service agency called "The Mission."

Stewart's death has homeless people across the city on edge.

"They can't sleep at night," one former homeless man said.

Police say they have worked a number of leads with no success, so they are searching for fresh ones.

"We haven't ruled anything out," Sgt. Mitch Meadows said.

There is a $3,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of the killer or killers. Call Crimestoppers at 1 800 226-TIPS.
